TEPPAN SAKUWAN
A moment to unwind in the city.
TEPPAN SAKUWAN in Saiin, Kyoto, balances prime cuts like rare-seared Kuroge Wagyu rump in house ponzu with grilled seasonal vegetable salads, drinking bites, and clay-pot rice cooked to order.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Located just a short walk from Hankyu Saiin Station, TEPPAN SAKUWAN offers an expansive teppanyaki lineup that moves effortlessly from substantial grilled meats to easygoing small plates meant to pair with drinks. The defining centerpiece of the menu is the rare-seared Kuroge Wagyu rump. Seared gently to keep the lean, red meat tender and succulent, it is served with house-made ponzu sauce, delivering rich beef flavor with a clean, refreshing finish. Diners looking for a more robust crust can opt for 120-gram diced steak cubes, a classic Kuroge Wagyu rump steak, or hearty US beef chuck roll cuts.
Vegetables cooked on the hot griddle form the restaurant's second pillar. The popular grilled seasonal vegetable salad comes with both house-made bagna cauda and fragrant yuzu sauces, bringing out the concentrated natural sweetness that high-heat teppan cooking unlocks. The surrounding menu is stocked with vibrant drinking snacks: bubbling ajillo served with crusty baguette, horse sashimi sourced from Kumamoto Higo horse, squid dressed with its own liver, and Nara-zuke pickled vegetables folded through cream cheese. Offerings like currywurst—thick sausage smothered in an original curry sauce—highlight how comfortably the kitchen caters to beer drinkers.
The drink selection ranges from draft beer and wine to cocktails and sake, allowing pairings tailored to the mood of the meal. To finish, diners can order clay-pot rice cooked from scratch upon request—such as a chicken kamameshi-style pot or a rich Camembert cheese version—or choose a petite buta-tama okonomiyaki sized comfortably for one. With both counter and table seating, the dining room accommodates everything from late-night solo meals to group gatherings around multi-course plans with all-you-can-drink options.
